Whales can often be a familiar site for many of the fishermen off the Port Elizabeth Coastline. They often come into Algoa Bay, the second largest bay of South Africa, especially after laws have been put into place to stem uncontrolled whale hunting which is paying dividence to the population increasing.
At present we are only allowed within 300 m of a whale but with some decent binoculars they can be a thrill to watch. Watching them do some of their most common behavioral characteristics such as breaching, head slaps, fluking and sailing can be a very spectaculer sight indeed. At times one might witness them giving birth or playing with there young.
The most common whale in South African Waters is the Southern Right Whale. For more on this whale please visit our introduction page on the Southern Right Whale |
